「罪」という概念全体が非常に人を戸惑わせる概念だと私には思われるが、これは私の罪深い性格によるものであることは疑いもないことである（注：冗談）。もし「罪」というものが、無用の損害をさけることにあるというのであれば、私も理解できる。数年前、イギリスの上院（貴族院）で、苦痛がはげしくて耐えられない場合の安楽死を合法 化する法案が提出された。数枚の診断書と患者の同意が必要であった。私には、単純に考えて、患者の同意を要求することは当然のことだと思われた。しかし、前カンタベリー大僧正　－カンタベリー大僧正は罪にかんするイギリスの公認専門家である― 　はそのような見解は誤りであると説明した。 （即ち、）患者の同意は安楽死を自殺にかえるものであり、そうして自殺は罪である（とのことであった）。上院の閣下達（貴族院議員諸君）はこの権威の声に耳を傾けた（傾聴した）、そうして、その法案を否決 した。その結果、大僧正を　―そして、もし彼が正しく報告しているとすれば、（彼が信ずる）神を喜ばせた。癌の犠牲者達はいぜんとして、かれらの医者あるいは看護婦が殺人のとがめを受ける危険をおかしてもよいとするほど十分になさけ深くないかぎり、何ヶ月も全く無用の苦しみに耐えなければならないのである。そのような拷問をじっと見つめる（熟視熟考する）ことから喜び得る神というものの概念に私は困難を見出す（理解できない）。そしてそのような気まぐれな残忍行為をなしうる神が もしあるとすれば、その神は崇敬に値するものとはとても考えられない。 しかしこのことはただ私が 道徳的にどんなに堕落しているかを証明するものにほかならない（注：もちろん、皮肉）。

The whole conception of “Sin” is one which I find very puzzling, doubtless owing to my sinful nature. If “Sin” consisted in causing needless suffering, I could understand; but on the contrary, sin often consists in avoiding needless suffering. Some years ago, in the English House of Lords, a bill was introduced to legalize euthanasia in cases of painful and incurable disease. The patient’s consent was to be necessary, as well as several medical certificates. To me, in my simplicity, it would seem natural to require the patient’s consent, but the late Archbishop of Canterbury, the English official expert on Sin, explained the erroneousness of such a view. The patient’s consent turns euthanasia into suicide, and suicide is sin. Their Lordships listened to the voice of authority, and rejected the bill. Consequently, to please the Archbishop — and his God, if he reports truly — victims of cancer still have to endure months of wholly useless agony, unless their doctors or nurses are sufficiently humane to risk a charge of murder. I find difficulty in the conception of a God who gets pleasure from contemplating such tortures; and if there were a God capable of such wanton cruelty, I should certainly not think Him worthy of worship.
