愛が（対象を）理解する鍵であると説く人もいるが,その理解が科学的理解のことであれば,この言葉は正しいと私は思わない。けれども,憎悪を物事の理解への鍵と見直すのは,さらに非科学的であろう。すべての感情は,理解しようとする対象について好意的であろうと悪意をもっていようと,必ず判断をゆがめる。・・・。
一般的にいって,我々は他人の行動について,その人を愛したり憎んだりしたりしていない限り,余り興味を持たない。他人に興味を持たなければ,あえて他人に関する知識を求めようとはしない。だが愛したり憎んだりする限り,我々が他人について得る情報は,間違えやすくなる傾向がある。このことは特に,他国に対する知識についても言える。

There are those who say that love is the key to understanding, but if scientific understanding is meant, I do not think they are right. It would, however, be even more unscientific to regard hatred as the key to understanding.
Every emotion, whether friendly or unfriendly, distorts judgement. If astronomers had regarded the moon either as a deity or as a devil it would have taken them much longer to construct, an adequate theory of the moon’s motions. Where human beings are concerned there is, however, a difficulty. We do not, as a rule take a very great interest in the doings of other people unless we either love or hate them. If we do not take an interest in them, we do not take the trouble to get information about them; while if we either love or hate them, the information which we shall obtain is likely to be misinformation. This applies in particular to one nation’s knowledge of another nation.

［寸言］
他国に対する理解や好悪の感情は,マスコミによって流される情報によってかなり影響されます。事件が起こらないより起こったほうが「生き生きとする」（大きな事件が起こってくれたほうがよいとさえ考えるマスコミ関係者も少なくない）というのが現実ですので,マスコミ報道については,常に冷静な目で見る必要があります。

最近は中国政府や中国国民（また韓国政府や韓国国民）を嫌わせるような報道が多いですが,逆に、中国や韓国における，日本政府や日本国民を嫌わせるような報道を同時に見ることによって,マスコミ報道に冷静に対応する態度を養い、自分なりの冷静な判断をすることが望まれます。
反韓（嫌韓）,反中国（嫌中国）のほとんどが,愛国主義の衣をまとっているのも共通しています。
某明治天皇の玄孫（やしゃご）とかいう人物が出している本も日本礼賛いっぺんとうです。そうすることによって,（天皇家につらなっているということで）自分の価値が高まると思っているようです。某歌手との打算的な？恋愛騒動では評判を落としたようです。話題になる人物は商品価値があるということで,マスコミは引き続き利用し続けるでしょうが・・・。
