このように，個人に訴えかけるものを，誇り，ねたみ，憎しみ，軽蔑，競争の喜びといった動機から引き出す組織（体）は（原注：私は,メアリルボーン・クリケット・クラブ Marylebone Cricket Club のような,たった一つの統治権限（governing authority）の範囲内で組織化できる単なるスポーツ競技は除外する。)，もしその組織が世界的な規模の場合には，その目的を達成することはできない。そういった情熱/情緒（注：ねたみ、憎しみなど）が強い世界においては，世界的規模に達した組織体は，必ずといってよいほど解体する。なぜなら，そういった組織は，自分を動かす原動力を失ってしまっているだろうからである。 　今述べてきたことによって明らかなように，我々は，組織（体）を統治している人々の感情よりも，むしろ組織（体）の普通のメンバー（成員）の感情について（これまで）考察してきた。組織体の目的がどのようなものであれ，統治者（its government）は権力から満足を引き出すので，その結果として，統治者（government）は組織の一般メンバー（成員）とは一致しない利益（利害）を持つことになる。それゆえ，世界征服（universal conquest）に対する欲求は，組織の普通のメンバー（成員）よりも組織の統治者の方に強く現れる傾向がある。 　にもかかわらず，協力によって実現される感情を具体化する組織(体)の力学と，その目的からいって本質的に争いが伴う組織(体)の力学との間には重要な相違がある。これは大きな広がりを持つ問題であり，当面、私は，組織（体）の目的は考慮しないで，もっぱら組織（体）の研究を制限するものについて指摘するにとどめたい。

Chapter XI: The Biology of Organizations, n.23 Thus an organization which derives its appeal to the individual from such motives as pride, envy, hate, contempt, or pleasure in contest (note: I am excluding merely sporting contests, which can be organized within a single governing authority such as the M.C.C.), cannot fulfil its purpose if it is world-wide. In a world where such passions are strong, an organization which becomes world-wide is pretty sure to break up, since it will have lost its motive force. It will be seen that, in what has just been said, we have been considering rather the sentiments of ordinary members of organizations than those of their governments. Whatever the purpose of an organization, its government derives satisfaction from power, and has, in consequence, an interest not identical with that of the members. The desire for universal conquest is therefore likely to be stronger in the government than in the members. Nevertheless, there is an important difference between the dynamics of organizations embodying sentiments to be realized by co-operation and that of those whose purposes essentially involve conflict. This is a large subject, and for the present I am merely concerned to point out the limitations to the study of organizations without regard to their purposes.
