人々が良い感情を持つことを保証することは大変望ましいことであるが,それは説教によっては達成できない。それどころか,罪人を後悔させたいという願いを口実にその罪人への悪意を正当化することは,罪（の存在）を信ずることの影響の一つである。我々が罪に関する信念を放棄すれば,道徳を楯にして罪人に対する冷酷な感情を偽装する（隠す）ことは,ずっと難しくなる。

On the contrary, one of the effects of a belief in sin is to justify malevolence towards the sinner under the guise of a wish to bring him to repentance. When we get rid of the belief in sin, it becomes much harder to disguise our unkind feelings, under a cloak of morality.
