私達は皆不当に興奮したり不当に緊張したり,自分たちの住んでいる世界の片隅や生と死の間のほんの一瞬の時間の重要性を不当に買いかぶる傾向がある。こうした興奮や私達自身の重要性の過大評価には,望ましいものは何もない。実際それは,私達をもっと懸命に働かせるかもしれないがもっと良く働かせはしないだろう。
We are all inclined to get unduly excited, unduly strained, unduly impressed with the importance of the little corner of the world in which we live, and of the little moment of time comprised between our birth and death. In this excitement and over-estimation of our own importance there is nothing desirable. True, it may make us work harder, but it will not make us work better.
