パトリック・キャンベル夫人（Patrick Campbell, 1865-1940：英国の舞台女優）が，バーナード・ショー（注：菜食主義者）によるリハーサル後に，「（菜食主義者でさえこうなんだから）あの人がビフテキを食べたならば，どうなったことでしょう。」と叫んだ。彼女は間違いなく，菜食主義者とつきあった経験がなかったのだ。もしも経験があったならば，ビフテキが彼女の最大の救いだと理解したであろう。このようなことは，世界史において目新しい現象ではない。皆知っているように，（温厚な）アベルは肉食であったが，（アベルを殺害した）カインは食事についてはバーナード・シヨーと同意見だった。

Everybody knows how Mrs Patrick Campbell, after being rehearsed by Bernard Shaw, exclaimed: ‘If he should ever eat a beefsteak, God help us.’ She evidently had little experience of those who live upon a vegetable diet. Otherwise she would have known that a beefsteak would constitute her best hope. This is not a new phenomenon in the world’s history. Abel, as we know, was a meat eater, but Cain agreed with Mr Bernard Shaw on the subject of diet.
