　私が唱道したい道徳は,成人や青年に対して,単純に「自分の衝動に従い,好きなようにやりなさい」と言うだけものではない。人生には首尾一貫性がなければならない。即ち,すぐに利益にはならなくて,いかなる時にも魅力的であるというわけではない目的を目指して,継続的な努力をしなければならない。他人への思いやり（考慮）も必要だし,正直であることについての一定の基準も必要である。けれども,私は,自制それ自体を目的であるとは考えていないし,我々の制度や道徳的慣習は,自制の必要を最大限ではなく,最小限にするようなものであることを望んでいる。
… : the morality which I should advocate does not consist simply of saying to grown-up people or to adolescents: ‘Follow your impulses and do as you like.’ There has to be consistency in life; there has to be continuous effort directed to ends that are not immediately beneficial and not at every moment attractive; there has to be consideration for others; and there should be certain standards of rectitude. I should not, however, regard self-control as an end in itself, and I should wish our institutions and our moral conventions to be such as to make the need for self-control a minimum rather than a maximum.
