もしあらゆるものが原因をもたねばならないなら,神にも原因がなければなりません。もし原因なしに何かが存在できるならば,その何かは,神でも世界でも(松下注：悪魔でも)よいことになります。それはまったく例のインド人の意見と同じです。それによりますと,世界は一頭の象の上にあり,その象は一匹の亀の上にあるというのです。ところで,「亀はどうなんですか」と聞かれた時,そのインド人は「話題を変えたらどうでしょうか」といったということです。
If everything must have a cause, then God must have a cause. If there can be anything without a cause, it may just as well be the world as God, so that there cannot be any validity in that argument. It is exactly of the same nature as the Hindu’s view, that the world rested upon an elephant and the elephant rested upon a tortoise; and when they said, “How about the tortoise?” the Indian said, “Suppose we change the subject.”.
