これらの人たちよりももっと面倒な人間は，菜食主義者（ベジタリアン）である。菜食主義者は，蠅一匹（虫一匹）殺さないおだやかで礼儀正しい人間だという通俗的な観念がある。多分菜食主義者は，蠅一匹（虫一匹）殺さないであろう。これに関しては私ははっきり言えないが，彼らが蝿（虫）に示す思いやりを，人間にまでは及ぼさないことは確かである。菜食(肉を食べないこと)を支持する最大の根拠は，たぶん，菜食は菜食を実行する人間に活力と喧嘩早い性質を植え付ける，という点であろう。

More troublesome than any of these is the vegetarian. There is a popular notion that vegetarians are mild and gentle folk who would not hurt a fly. Perhaps they would not hurt a fly. As to this, I cannot speak, but their charity towards flies certainly does not extend to human beings. Perhaps the most powerful argument in favour of a vegetarian diet is the vigour and pugnacity which it gives to those
who practise it.
