「知性」という言葉は,正確に言えば,既に獲得された知識よりも,知識を獲得する知的能力をさしていることは,疑問の余地はない。しかし,この才能は,ピアニストや曲芸師の才能と同様,訓練なしに獲得されるとは考えられない。

No doubt the word ‘intelligence’ properly signifies rather an aptitude for acquiring knowledge than knowledge already acquired.; but I do not think this aptitude is acquired except by exercise, any more than the aptitude of a pianist or an acrobat.
