【"choose"：いくつかの中から一つを選ぶ。】
【"elect"：常に「役職者」を直接対象として選ぶ。】
【"select"：３つ以上のものの中から「選ぶ（精選する）」。選択肢が２つしかない場合には使わない。】

(1-1) You have to choose either of the two courses.
[２つの課程のどちらかを選ばないといけない。]

(1-2) He chose the largest apple in the basket and bit into it.
[彼はバスケットの中の一番大きなリンゴを選んでかぶりついた。]

(2-1) The American people elect their president every four years.
[アメリカ国民は４年毎に彼らの大統領を選挙する。]

(2-2) We are to elect the chairman of the board next Tuesday.
[来る火曜に筆頭重役（筆頭理事）を選ばなければならない。]
* "elect"は役職(者)を選ぶのであり,「誰かに投票する」場合は"vote for someone"。

(2-3) The problem always is to elect a textbook for your English class out of hudreds of famous ckassics.

When we are born we do not choose whether we are to be born capitalists or proletarians, but if the latter we are among the elect, and if the former we are not.
