★ impel / compel (pp.119-121)
　"impel"：同義語は、"motivate", move", "drive"。人の心に強く働きかけて行動に踏み切る気持ちにさせることで、この言葉の焦点は行動する本人の内面にある。また、impel の対象が人間でない場合は、「推進する」「前方に推し進める」意になる。
　-1. Family necessity impelled him to take in two or three jobs./ He was impelled to take in two or three jobs by family necessity. （家族を養う必要から、彼は２つも、３つも、仕事を持って働かなければならなかった。）
　-2. He has impelling personality.（彼は人を動かすことのできる人格を持っている。）

　"compel"：同義語は "force"。（心理的に）力づくで相手に何かをさせることで、焦点はそういう暴力的な力を持った外部事情のほうにあり、行動をとらされる当人にはない。
　* Her formidable skill compels our admiration.（彼女のものすごい技術は我々を感嘆させる。）

　Ｒ英単語・熟語集の用例とはできるだけ重複しないようにしますが、用例が少ない場合はどうしても重複してしまいます。あしからず。
