第３巻第４章 バートランド・ラッセル平和財団
私がもうろくしているかどうか,あるいは,それどころか,彼らが以前信じていたよりももっと私は愚かであるかどうか,結論を出したいと思っている人々に対しては,−−私は数え切れないほど多くの新聞やテレビのインタビューに応じており,幾つかの映画を作っているので−−,そうする十分の機会がこれまで与えられてきている。私がどのようなインタビューの依頼に応ずるか判断するにあたって固執している一般的な原則は,私の活動や思想に関してよりも,私の「私生活」として知られていることの詳細についてより深い関心をもっていそうなものは全てお断りする,ということである。後者の場合（私の活動や思想に関する場合）は,公表される方がありがたいので,それらについての正直な報道や批判を歓迎する。
私が見た（＝後から放送の録画を視聴した）最近数年間のこうしたテレビ放送のなかで最も良いと私が思ったものの一つは,1963年の10月初めにジョン・フリーマンにインタビューを受けたものである（上記写真出典：R. Clark's The Life of Bertrand Russell, c.1975／YouTubeで視聴できるラッセルの肉声）。
（訳注： BBCによる Face to Face (British TV programme)というインタビューシリーズは、1959年から「1962年」の間放送されており、とても人気があった番組のようです。ウィキペディア（英語）にも詳細な説明が掲載されています。
ラッセルは「良かったインタビュー番組は、1963年10月に行われた John Freeman との対談」だと書いていますが、放送時期はラッセルの記憶違い（あるいは誤記）であり、実際は1959年３月頃に行われたものだと推察されます。なお、YouTube では一部のみ視聴できます。BBCのサイトでは英国民には無制限に公開されているようですが、日本からは現在視聴できないようです。）
もう一つは1964年4月の初めの対談で,ロバート・ボルト(Robert Oxton Bolt, 1924-1995：イギリスの劇作家,脚本家。『ドクトル・ジバゴ』や『アラビアのロレンス』などの映画脚本で有名)がインタビュワーを務めたものである(彼との対談は1967年にもあったが,それは私は録画を見て確認していない)。さらに,1965年９月のラルフ・ミリバンド(Ralph Miliband, 1924-1994:マルクス主義政治理論の研究者)との対談もよかった。けれども,言うまでもなく,私は放送された対談の多くは見て確認していない。
 私が行った最も重要な２つの公開演説は,ハロルド・ウイルソンが首相を務めている下での労働党政府の'裏切り'（背信行為）に関するものであった。その一つは1965年２月中旬に行った演説であり,もう一つはその8ケ月後に行ったものである。最初の公開演説は,労働党政府の外交政策一般を取り扱っており,２番目の演説は,特にヴェトナム問題に関する政策について詳細に論じたものであり,それゆえ,後者は私の『ヴェトナムにおける戦争犯罪』（War Crimes in Vietnam,1967）に収録されている。この公開演説の最後で私は,労働党からの脱退を宣言し,党員証をひきさいた。驚いたことに,この行為は同じ壇上にいたもう二人のスピーカー −一人は国会議員で,もう一人はCND（核兵器撤廃運動)の委員長− をひどくいらだたせた。後者は,世間の注目をひくために私は勝手な演出（スタンド・プレー）を行ったと,新聞に述べた。もし私がそのような行為ができたのであれば,どうして私がそうしてはいけなかったのか,理解できない。しかし,実際のところは,一切の運営はその公開演説会を主催していた青年CNDの手中にあった。（スピーカである）その国会議員は,−−ベトナムの問題について,以前からしばしば私と同様の意見を表明してきていた−− 遅れて演説会にやってきたが,私のこの行為のためにこっそりと会場を出て行った。私の言っていることと同じことをその二人とも頻繁に言っていたので,このような奇異な振舞によって,私はかなりあっけにとられた。私との唯一の違いは,彼らが公然と非難していたその労働党の党籍を彼らは離脱しなかったということのように思われた。

Those who wish to make up their own minds as to whether or not I am senile or, even, sillier than they had formerly believed me to be, have been given ample opportunity to do so as I have given countless newspaper and TV interviews and made several films. The general rule to which I adhere in determining to which requests for interviews to accede to is to refuse all those that show signs of being concerned with details of what is known as my 'private life' rather than my work and ideas. The latter, I am glad to have publicised, and I welcome honest reports and criticisms of them. The best of these TV interviews that I have seen during the last years seemed to me to be one in early October, 1963, with John Freeman; one made in early April, 1964, in which Robert Bolt was the interlocutor (there is also a later one, made in 1967 with him, but I have not seen it); and one made in September, 1965, with Ralph Milliband. But many, of course, I have never seen. The two most important public speeches that I have made have been those concerned with the perfidy of the Labour Govermnent under the premiership of Harold Wilson, one in mid-Febulary 1965, and one eight months later. The first deals with the general international policies of the Government, the second dwells upon its policies in regard, especially, to Vietnam and is, therefore, reprinted in my book War Crimes in Vietnam. At the end of the second, I announced my resignation from the Party and tore up my Labour card. To my surprise, this intensely annoyed two of the other speakers on the platform, a Member of Parliament and the Chairman of the CND. The latter remarked to the press that I had stage-managed the affair. If I had been able to do so, I do not know why I should not have done so, but, in actual fact, all the management was in the hands of the Youth CND under whose auspices the meeting was held. The MP, who had often expressed views similar to mine on Vietnam, arrived late at the meeting and stalked out because of my action. I was rather taken aback by this singular behaviour as both these people had been saying much what I said. The only difference seemed to be that they continued in memhership of the Party they denounced.
