第３巻第２章　国の内外で ラッセルの言葉366 　当時(この時)のことをふり返ってみると,昼夜にわたり,どのようにしてそれら全てのことをやりとげるだけの時間を確保することができたのか（←が与えられたものか）,自分にもわからない。ローマとパリへの旅行,それからスコットランドヘの再度の旅行,家庭内の問題（ごたごた）,休暇の間北ウェールズに住むための手配,手紙の執筆,討論会（への出席）,訪問客への対応,演説等々。私は,数えきれぬほどの論文・エッセイを執筆した（参考：1955年執筆の論文等）。しばしばインタビューに応じ,またアメリカ人の R．C．マーシュと頻繁に手紙のやり取りをした。彼は,翌年『論理と知識』（Logic and Knowledge, 1956）という書名で出版された私の初期の多様な論文を集めてその編集に当たっていた。それから,1956年に出版予定の『自伝的回想』（Portraits from Memoty, and Other Essays, 1956）の準備もしていた。1955年の１月には,英国学士院で,ジョン・スチュアート・ミルについて講演をしたが,その講演内容を組み立てるのに大変苦労をした。私はそれまでに既に何度も繰り返しミルについて講演をしてきた（からである>。しかし,その時の講演で,今でも懐かしく思う一句がある。私は,「「命題は主語と述語から成る」ということについて話している時,「それは三千年に渡る重要（重大）な誤りを導いてしまった」と述べた（ことである）。そしてその演説は,もっとも満足を与える仕方で歓呼された。即ち,聴衆は立ち上り,床を踏み鳴らし,拍手喝采をしてくれた。

v.3,chap.2: At home and abroad When I look back upon this time I do not see how the days and nights provided time to get through all that I did. Journeys to Rome and Paris and again to Scotland, family troubles, arrangements to settle in North Wales for the holidays, letters, discussions, visitors, and speeches. I wrote innumerable articles. I had frequent interviews and much correspondence with an American, R. C. Marsh, who was collecting and editing various early essays of mine which appeared the following year under the titie Logic and Knowledge. And I was also preparing my book Portraits from Memoty for publication in 1956. In January, 1955, I gave a lecture at the British Academy on J. S. Mill which I had considerable difficulty in composing. I had already spoken so often about Mill. But the speech had one phrase that I cherish: in speaking about the fact that propositions have a subject and a predicate, I said it had led to 'three thousand years of important error'. And the speech was acclaimed in a most gratifying manner. The audience rose, thumped and clapped.
