不幸の心理的な原因は,明らかに,多種多様である.しかし,いかなる不幸にも,共通点がある。不幸な人間の典型は,若いときに何らかの正常な満足を奪われたため,その一種類の満足を他の何よりも価値があると思うようになり,それゆえ,自分の人生に一方的な方向性を与え,その目的に関連した活動ではなく,その目的の達成のみをまったく不当に強調するようになった人である。
The psychological causes of unhappiness, it is clear, are many and various. But all have something in common. The typical unhappy man is one who, having been deprived in youth of some normal satisfaction, has come to value this one kind of satisfaction more than any other, and has therefore given to his life a one-sided direction, together with a quite undue emphasis upon the achievement as opposed to the activities connected with it.
