p.220母国語話者は、ある単語、あるいは単語の組み合わせについて、それがどのくらいの頻度で使われるのかということを感覚的に知っている。・・・
 この直感が非母国語話者にはなかなか持てない。そのため、いきおい、very や much などをよく使ってしまう。
p.221: (たとえば)「厳しい競争を勝ち抜かなければならない」という文を英語にするとき、形容詞をどのように選んだらよいだろうか? google で「厳しい 英語」と検索し、Weblio の和英辞典を見てみると、tight, unsparing, exacting, stern, strict, rugged, tough, intense, acute, severe など、多くの単語が挙げられている。これ以外にも hard, difficult などが使えるかも知れない。・・・。
: ・・・しかしここでチェックしておきたいのは、(使用)頻度である。SkELL の Exsamples では、トップに頻度情報が出ている。・・・
 "severe competition" の頻度は 0.03 hits per million、100万語につき 0.03件とある。 tough competion が0.29件、fierce competition が0.4件なので、"severe competition" は典型的な言い方ではないことがわかる。
