【"opposite"：名詞として使われた場合、"opposite"は"counterpart"（他の社会で自分と同じ立場にある人）のこと。】
【"opponent"："opponent"は敵「手」のことであるが、あくまでも反対の立場をとる相手のことで、敵意の有無は問わない。】

(1) The blue collar worker in the U. S. gets far more than his opposite in Japan.
[アメリカのブルーカラーは日本のブルーカラーよりもずっとたくさんの賃金を得ている。]

(2) In Jujutsu, one is taught to take quick advantage of his opponent's weight.
