（もうひとつの）別の種類の難点があり、それは、実体（substance）という概念に対する定評のある反論（objections 異論）と関連している。 私がラテン語の小文字で示した個物（個別者）は､構文的な意味（文法的な意味）での実体でなければならないように思われた。もっとも、それらの実体は、伝統的に実体が有すると考えられてきた不滅性という特性を持つ必要はないであろう。 ｢これこれの特性を持つ」という陳述が常に（文として）有意義であり（意義を持ち）､かつ、決して分析的なものではないとすると、その結果として（必然的に）、x はその全ての特性の和とは異なる何ものかであり、他の個物（個別者） y とは純粋に数的にも異なるものでなければならず、二つの個物（個別者）x と y は全ての特性を共有しつつやはり２つであるということが論理的に可能でなくてはならないということになる、と私には思われた。 しかしもちろん、我々はそれらが二つであることを知ることはできないであろう。なぜなら､もし二つであると我々知ることができるならば、x と y とは異なるが、y はyと異ならない（訳注：x は yと異なるという特性を持つが、y は y と異ならないという特性を持たない）、ということを知りうることを含む（伴う）ことになるからである｡このようにして、実際上、、x は、単なる不可知な基体（subsratum）、あるいは（即ち）、もろもろの特性が､農家の梁（はり）からハムのように吊るされるところの(梁からでている)かけ釘（beams）のようなものになるであろう。 このような考察 は「個別」の概念を困難におとしいれ､何らかの脱出手段を求めることを促す（のである）。

There was another class of difficulty which was connected with the well-established objections to the notion of substance. It seemed as if the particulars which I had denoted by small Latin letters would have to be substances in a syntactical sense, though they would not need to have the property of indestructibility which substances were traditionally supposed to possess. If the statement that x has such and such a property is always significant, and never analytic, it seems to follow that x is something different from the sum of all its properties, and that it must differ from another particular, y, purely numerically, so that it should be logically possible for the two particulars, x and y, to share all their properties and yet be two. We could not, of course, know that they were two, for that would involve knowing that x differs from y, which y does not do: x, in fact, would become a mere unknowable substratum, or an invisible peg from which properties would hang like hams from the beams of a farmhouse. Such considerations make the concept of 'particulars' difficult, and invite a search for some way of escape.
