第３巻第３章　トラファルガー広場 ラッセル英単語・熟語1500 　この（1961.9.17の）デモやデモに先立つ我々（百人委員会メンバー）の投獄に関するテレビや新聞の解説や写真が,全世界の国々に報道された（←現れた）。それらは,あらゆる地域の人々に,我々がやっていること,やろうとしていること,またなぜそのような行為をするのか,について考えさせるのに素晴らしい効果があった。それは,我々が起こることを望んだ事態ではあったが,圧倒されるほど世間に知れ渡り,関心をひくことに対し,我々は十分備えていなかった。我々は,最初から,いかなるデモにおいても,投獄の可能性を考慮し,ある一定の数のメンバーのみが自らを晒すように,注意深く調整してきた。（活動を継続させるため）一団の指導者たちがいつも残っているようにしなければならなかった。しかし政府は,特定の日時に特定の悪事（犯罪）を犯したためというのではなく,民衆を扇動したという理由で,大量の百人委員会委員に有罪の宣告をして,我々が用意していたこの（指導者）当番表を使用不能にしようとしていたのである。それに加えて,逮捕が９月17日の総スクラム(一斉デモ)の間に行なわれたので,誰それは逮捕されるかもしれない,誰それはされないだろう,ということを追跡することはほとんどできなかった。その結果,百人委員会のメンバーで'緊急を要する問題'（注：日高氏は pressing matters を「報道関係のこと」と訳されている。）を取り扱ったり,将来のプランをたてたりする経験をもっている者がほとんど残らなかった。私自身は,主として,自分の投獄から生じた問題で疲れていたし,また多忙であり,その問題は私だけしか処理できないものであった。すべてこうしたことは,本当に残念なことであった。なぜなら大きなチャンスを与えられていたのに十分に利用することができなかったからである。

v.3,chap.3: Trafalgar Square Television and press accounts and pictures of this demonstration and of the preceding gaolings appeared in countries throughout the world. They had an excellent effect in setting people everywhere thinking about what we were doing and attempting to do and why. That was what we had hoped would happen, but we had not prepared sufficiently for the overwhelming publicity and interest that would be generated. From the beginning we had been careful to arrange that only certain of our members would expose themselves to possible imprisonment at any particular demonstration. There was always to be a corps of leaders to carry on the work. But the Government, by sentencing a large number, not for any particular misdeed at any particular time, but for the general charge of incitement, had managed to disrupt this rota. Added to this, were the arrests made during the general scrum of the September 17th sit-down when track could hardly be kept of who might be arrested and who not. The result was that there were very few experienced members of the Committee left to deal with pressing matters and future plans. I was tired and kept busy by matters that only I could deal with arising chiefly from my imprisonment. All this was a grievous pity for we had been given a great chance which we were unable to avail ourselves of fully.
