悪を憎むこと自体は，一種の悪への屈従（悪にとらわれること）である。悪から抜けだす道は、憎悪を通してではなく、理解を通してである。私は無抵抗を擁護しているのではない。だが私が言おうとしているのはこうである－－もし抵抗が悪の広がりを防ぐうえで効果的であるためには，最大限の（対象についての）理解と，私たちが保持したいと思う良きものが生き残ることと両立する最小限の強制力とを結びつけなければならない、ということである。
Hatred of evil is itself a kind of bondage to evil. The way out is through understanding, not through hate. I am not advocating non-resistance. But I am saying that resistance, if it is to be effective in preventing the spread of evil, should be combined with the greatest degree of understanding and the smallest degree of force that is compatible with the survival of the good things that we wish to preserve.

【知恵というものは、学校教育によって生まれるものではなく、それを一生かけて得ようとする努力の産物である。（1954年3月24日付のアインシュタインから哲学者エリック・グートキンドへの手紙)】
この言葉が示すように、知恵は教育によって自動的に得られるものではなく、私たち自身が生涯かけて獲得していくものです。感情に支配された状態では、冷静な判断はできません。例えば、「坊主憎けりゃ袈裟まで憎い」という状態は、感情に支配され、冷静な判断ができないことを意味します。このような状態が行き過ぎると、後悔につながる事態を招きかねません。 憎悪の原因は誤解に基づくものかも知れません。家庭内のことであれば、いずれ誤解が解け、仲直りすれば大きな問題にはなりません。
しかし、これが隣国との関係であれば、状況はより深刻です。自分が直接危害を加えなくても、自分が属する世論の力によって両国の関係が悪化し、最悪の場合には暴発や戦争につながる危険もあります。
こうした状況において、対立を煽って支持を得ようとする政治家と、冷静に説得して支持を得ようとする政治家とでは、正反対の立場にあります。前者は理性的かつ論理的に有権者を説得する能力を欠いているか、あるいは愚かな有権者が多いと思って説得をあきらめているか、いずれかでしょう。自分は愚かだと思う有権者はほとんどいないでしょうが。

As this statement indicates, wisdom is not something that can be obtained automatically through education; it is something we acquire over the course of our lives through our own effort. When we are dominated by emotion, we cannot make calm and rational judgments. For example, the saying "Hate the monk, and you will hate even his robe" illustrates a state in which emotion overrides reason. When such a state goes too far, it can lead to regrettable consequences. The cause of hatred may even be based on misunderstanding. Within a family, misunderstandings can eventually be resolved, and reconciliation prevents serious problems.
However, when the situation involves relations with a neighboring country, the stakes are much higher. Even if we do not directly harm others, the power of public opinion to which we belong can worsen relations between the two countries, and in the worst case, lead to an outbreak of violence or even war.
In such circumstances, politicians who incite conflict to gain support stand in direct opposition to those who calmly attempt to persuade and earn support. The former either lack the ability to persuade voters rationally and logically, or they give up on persuasion, assuming that many voters are foolish. Few voters, of course, think of themselves as foolish.
