たとえば、熊にダンスを教えたいと思えば、熊を、足を長く置いておけないほど熱い台の上に乗せます。そして、その間中、オーケストラで「ルール・ブリタニア」（訳注：英国国歌ではなく、英国愛国の歌）を演奏します。しばらくすると、「ルール・ブリタニア」を演奏するだけで熊を踊らせるようになるでしょう。私たち（人間）の知的生活は、どれほど高みに飛翔しても、この原理にもとづいているのです。
For example: if you wish to teach bears to dance, you place them upon a platform so hot that they cannot bear to leave a foot on it for more than a moment, and meanwhile you play "Rule Britannia" on the orchestra. After a time "Rule Britannia" alone will make them dance. Our intellectual life, even in its highest flights, is based upon this principle.

＜寸言＞
私たちは胎内にいる時から音楽のシャワーをあびていると考えることもできそうです。母親の心臓の音にはリズムがあり、周囲から聞こえてくる音楽にはリズムとともにメロディーがあります。
「本日のラッセルの言葉」は、私たち人間は音楽によっていかに影響されているかを、思い出させてくれます。自分は踊らされない冷静な思考の持ち主だと自信を持っていても、強く感情を動かせられるものにはどうしても影響を受けがちであり、負の側面もでてきます。
確かに（人間以外の）動物と異なり、人間は自分を対象化して見ることができます。しかし、刺激に対してまったく影響を受けないわけにはいきません。逆に、踊らされまいとして激しく反発すれば、やっぱり影響されていることになります。いや、相手は、同調ではなく、実は反発を期待してそのような刺激をあなたに与えているかも知れないのです。
It may even be said that we are showered with music from the time we are in the womb. The sound of the mother's heartbeat has its own rhythm, and the music we hear from the outside world comes with both rhythm and melody.
“Today's Words of Russell" reminds us of how strongly we humans are influenced by music. Even if we pride ourselves on being cool-headed thinkers who cannot be manipulated, we are inevitably affected by anything that stirs our emotions deeply, and this influence can have negative aspects as well.
Indeed, unlike other animals, human beings have the capacity to see themselves objectively. Yet we cannot remain completely unaffected by external stimuli. On the contrary, if we react strongly in an attempt not to be manipulated, we are still being influenced. In fact, they may even be provoking you in the hope of eliciting not agreement but rather opposition.
