I wished to say everything in the smallest number of words in which it could be said clearly. Perhaps, I thought, one should imitate Baedeker rather than any more literary model. I would spend hours trying to find the shortest way of saying something without ambiguity, and to this aim I was willing to sacrifice all attempts at aesthetic excellence.

ラッセルは若い頃の文章修業時代、自分が言いたいことを可能な限り簡潔明瞭に表現しようと大変な努力をしました。その際参考にしたのは旅行案内書だったというのは、興味深いことです。Twitter は入力できる文字数が非常に制限されていますが、ラッセルが現在生きていたら、Twitter によってきっと大きな影響を与えることができただろうと想像されます。Twitter の有利な点は、文章だけだと誤解を与える可能性がありますが、画像や動画を添付することで主張を補強することができることです。
Russell, during his early years of practicing writing, made great efforts to express what he wanted to say as concisely and clearly as possible. It is interesting that he took travel guides as a reference in this process. Twitter imposes a very strict limit on the number of characters one can input, but one can imagine that if Russell were alive today, he would have been able to make a significant impact through Twitter. One advantage of Twitter is that, while text alone can sometimes lead to misunderstandings, attaching images or videos can help reinforce one’s message.
