もし自分の信念が理性に基づいていると考えるならば、それを議論によって支えようとするだろうし、議論の結果、自分の考えが誤っているとわかれば、そのその信念を放棄するだろう。しかし、自分の信念が「信仰」に基づいている場合、議論が無意味であることを悟り、そのため、迫害という形で力に訴えたり、「教育」と呼ばれる手段によって若者の心を歪めたり萎縮させたりすることになる。後者のやり方は特に卑劣である。なぜなら、それは未熟な心の無防備さにつけ込むものだからである。残念ながら、こうしたことは多かれ少なかれ、あらゆる文明国の学校で行われている。
If you think that your belief is based upon reason, you will support it by argument, rather than by persecution, and will abandon it if the argument goes against you. But if your belief is based on faith, you will realize that argument is useless, and will therefore resort to force either in the form of persecution or by stunting and distorting the minds of the young in what is called “education". This last is peculiarly dastardly, since it takes advantage of the defencelessness of immature minds. 現代の日本の公教育においては、偏向教育と呼ばれるものはあまり見られず、民主主義的な教師及び教育のもと、生徒に論理的思考能力をつけさせることに力を入れている、と言ってよいでしょうか？
それが事実であれば、「本日のラッセルの言葉」の内容は当たり前のことであり、示唆的な内容はないと思う人が多いはずです。しかし、初等教育に「愛国心」教育の強化を盛り込もうとする動き時々みられます。そういった時には、「子供の未熟な心の無防備さにつけ込むやり方は卑劣である」というラッセルの指摘を思い出し、警戒する必要があります。旧統一教会の支援をずっと受けてきた旧安倍派の保守的な政治家の動きには要注意です。
In contemporary Japanese public education, so-called biased education is not often observed, and it can be said that under democratic teachers and education, efforts are being made to develop students' logical thinking skills. If this is indeed the case, then the content of "Today's Words from Russell" would be taken as self-evident, and many might find nothing particularly thought-provoking in it.
However, from time to time, there are movements to strengthen "patriotic education" in elementary schools. In such cases, we should recall Russell's warning that "taking advantage of the defenselessness of immature minds is dastardly" and remain vigilant. Particular caution is needed regarding the actions of conservative politicians from the former Abe faction, who have long received support from the former Unification Church.
