Socially important irrational beliefs almost all spring from one thing in human nature, which is the tendency to think that what is of emotional importance to the individual or the race must be of causal importance in the outer world. ... It is difficult to believe that the external world is indifferent to our hopes and fears. We can imagine it to be kindly, or we can imagine it to be hostile, but most people at most times have found it almost impossible to imagine that the outer world cares nothing as to whether our wishes are fulfilled or thwarted.

人類はこの宇宙にとって良い存在でも悪い存在でもなく、宇宙は人類の存在にまったく関心をもっていません（無関係です）。とは言っても、我々（人類）にとって我々（人類）は重要だと考えて行動するほうがよいことは言うまでもありません。ただし、頭の片隅にはその厳粛な事実をよく認識し、傲慢になるなといったところでしょうか？
Humanity is neither a good nor a bad presence in this universe, and the universe is utterly indifferent to humanity's existence (unrelated to it). That said, it goes without saying that it is better for us (for humankind) to think and act as though we are important to ourselves. However, perhaps we should always keep that solemn fact in mind and avoid becoming arrogant.
