無意識が意識に与える影響については心理学者による研究がかなりあるが, 意識が無意識に与える影響についての研究ははるかに少ない。しかし, 精神衛生の分野では後者の研究は非常に重要であり, もし合理的な確信（理性に基づく確信）が無意識の領域で(も)働くべきであるとするならば, そのことは理解されなければならない。
There has been a great deal of study by psychologists of the operation of the unconscious upon the conscious, but much less of the operation of the conscious upon the unconscious. Yet the latter is of vast importance in the subject of mental hygiene, and must be understood if rational convictions are ever to operate in the realm of the unconscious.
