　従って、倫理的な議論は、それが単に所与の目的に対する最良の手段に関するものでない場合には、たとえそれが直接法（注：主観的要素を交えずに事実をそのままに述べる語法）を使うことによって偽装されたものであったとしても、感情に向けられたものであるという点で、科学的な議論とは異なる。このような理由から、倫理的な議論は不可能だと思われてはならない。議論によって感情に影響を与えることは、知的確信に影響を与えるほど容易ではないにしても、容易である。知的な議論では、訴えることができる非人間的な真理の基準があると想定されているが、一方、倫理学では、上記（前述）の見解によれば、そのような基準は存在しないように見えるという困難が感じられる。この難問は現実的で深い。

It follows that ethical argument, when it is not merely as to the best means to a given end, differs from scientific argument in being addressed to the emotions, however it may disguise itself by use of the indicative mood. It must not be supposed that, on this account, ethical argument is impossible; it is as easy, if not easier, to influence emotions by argument as to influence intellectual convictions. The difficulty that will be felt is that, in intellectual argument, there is supposed to be a standard of impersonal truth to which we are appealing, while in ethics, on the above view, there appears to be no such standard. This difficulty is real and profound.

　本年もよろしくお願いいたします。

　「議論によって感情に影響を与えることは、知的確信に影響を与えるほど容易ではないにしても、容易である。」という主張に対して、多くの人が「そんなことはない」と言いそうですが、ラッセルのように能力や表現力、説得力のある議論ができる人からみれば、そのように感じられるということです。自分ができないからと言って、他人ができないという証明にはなりません。
