哲学は、少なくとも名目上は（nominally）権威や伝統に訴えないという事実によって 宗教と区別された。また、哲学は、その目的の一つの不可欠な部分がいかに生きるべきかを人に教えることであったという事実によって、科学と区別された。哲学の 宇宙に関する理論と倫理に関する理論は密接に結びついていた。時には倫理的動機がその哲学者の宇宙の本性についての見解に影響を与え、また、時には哲学者の宇宙についての見解がその哲学者を倫理的な結論へと導いた（のである）。。
Philosophy was distinguished from religion by the fact that, nominally at least, it did not appeal to authority or tradition; it was distinguished from science by the fact that an essential part of its purpose was to tell men how to live. Its cosmological and ethical theories were closely interconnected: sometimes ethical motives influenced the philosopher's views as to the nature of the universe, sometimes his views as to the universe led him to ethical conclusions.

＜寸言＞
これはあくまでも歴史上普通に考えられてきた意味での哲学であり、特別どうってことない発言です。しかし、常識的なことでも、哲学に関する本を読んだことがほとんどない人にとっては参考になるかも知れないので、アラカルトではなくありきたりの「定食」(?)として引用してみました。(なお、哲学者は「権威や伝統に訴えない」はずですが、著名な哲学者の権威に訴える哲学「研究者」はいっぱいいます。)
ラッセルが目指したのは、その個人の好き嫌いや倫理観に影響されない、誰でも偏見なく論議できる、科学的な方法による哲学です。ラッセルは、オックスフォード大学で1914年に行われたハーバード・スペンサー記念講演「哲学における科学的方法」（Scientific Method in Philosophy,1914． Reprinted in :Mysticism and Logic, and Other Essays, 1918, chap.6）のなかで次のように言っています。
「私の（哲学に関する）信条はこうである。倫理的・宗教的な動機は、それらが生み出す見事な想像力にもかかわらず、全体として哲学の進歩を妨げてきた。哲学的真理を発見しようとする者は、今こそ意識的にそれを脇に追いやるべきである。」（t is my belief that the ethical and religious motives in spite of the splendidly imaginative systems to which they have given rise, have been on the whole a hindrance to the progress of philosophy, and ought now to be consciously thrust aside by those who wish to discover philosophical truth.）
