ごく現代的な人々でさえ「血筋が語る」と言う。科学的な生理学者が、ネグロの血と白人の血の間には何の違いもないということを世の中に向かって保証しても何の役にもたたない。米国赤十字社は、アメリカが現在の戦争（第二次世界大戦）に巻き込まれた時、当初は、大衆の偏見に屈服し、輸血にはネグロの血は決して使用してはならないと、布告した。世論が沸騰した結果、ネグロの血を使用してもよいがネグロの患者向けに限られる、ということが認められた。
Even quite modern people say that "blood will tell." It is no use for scientific physiologists to assure the world that there is no difference between the blood of a Negro and the blood of a white man. The American Red Cross, in obedience to popular prejudice, at first, when America became involved in the present war, decreed that no Negro blood should be used for blood transfusion. As a result of an agitation, it was conceded that Negro blood might be used, but only for Negro patients.

現在では、人種差別がまだ残っている米国南部でさえ、人種差別的な献血制限は撤廃されているそうですが、そうなるまでには長い年月がかかりました。
しかし、最近になっても、たとえば、エホバの証人の信者による（我が子に対する）輸血拒否事件が時々起こっており、「血（血液）」に対する迷信はいろいろな形で残っています。
