強い情緒（感情）は全て、それ自身の神話を創り上げる傾向がある。その情緒（感情）が一個人に特有のものである場合には、もしその人が自分で創り出した神話を自ら信用するなら、その人は多少とも頭がおかしい（正気ではない）と考えられる。 しかし、戦争における神話のように、一つの情緒（感情）が集団的なものである場合には、自然に生じる神話を訂正する者は誰もいない。
Every powerful emotion has its own myth-making tendency. When the emotion is peculiar to an individual, he is considered more or less mad if he gives credence to such myths as he has invented. But when an emotion is collective, as in war, there is no one to correct the myths that naturally arise.
