今日の（現代的な）学校で教えられる事柄は,それ自体知る価値があるものが多いが,通例,それは生徒が完全には理解しない方法で教えられる。その結果,大人達は正確さを欠いた心的習性を身につけ,悪意のある動機による事実の歪曲に気付かなくなる。
専門職を選ぶことを心に決めた現代の若者は通常学校では怠け,専門的訓練を受ける時になって初めて一生懸命勉強を開始する傾向がある。ロー・スクールやメディカル・スクールにおいて,彼は知識習得に懸命になるが,それらの知識が彼にとって疑いえない経済的効用を持つからである。
What is taught in up-to-date schools is often worth knowing on its own account but is usually taught in such a way that the pupils do not know it at the end. The consequence is that adults have slipshod habits of mind and cease to notice distortions of fact which have a sinister motive.
The modern youth who intends to adopt a profession tends to be idle at school and only to begin hard work when he embarks upon technical training. In law school or medical school he exerts himself to acquire knowledge because it has for him an obvious economic utility.

消化不良の知識はいっぱいもっているが論理的思考能力の弱い人（国民）は、「正確さを欠いた心的習性を身につけ,悪意のある動機による事実の歪曲に気付かなくなる」という危険があります。
論理的思考能力は、数学、論理学、物理学などの勉強によってよく身につけることができます。哲学においては論理的思考能力が「命」ですが、日本では数学が嫌いな人やできない人が文学部で哲学を専攻するようなことがめずらしくありません。政治家の場合は、調整能力やリーダーシップが最重要ですが、（現状のように）論理的思考能力が貧弱であってよいはずはありません。
