1907年に私は,国会議員補欠選挙の時,女性の選挙権を擁護して,立候補さえもした。（ロンドン郊外の）ウィンブルドン地区における選挙戦は,期間が短く,また困難なものであった。いまの若い人々にとって,男女平等に対する当時の反対の激しさを想像することはほとんど不可能であろう。後に,私は第一次世界大戦反対の運動を行ったが,その時の一般大衆の抵抗は,1907年に婦人参政権論者が受けた一般大衆の抵抗の激しさに比べれば,比較にならないほど,より穏やかなものであった。
In 1907 I even stood for Parliament at a by-election, on behalf of votes for women. The Wimbledon Campaign was short and arduous. It must be quite impossible for younger people to imagine the bitterness of the opposition to women's equality. When, in later years, I campaigned against the First World War, the popular opposition that I encountered was not comparable to that which the suffragists met in 1907.

＜寸言＞ 確か前に一度引用したことがあると思いますが、添付した写真は新しくネットで発見しためずらじい1907年にラッセルが立候補した年に撮された写真です。
お腹あたりに見える鎖のように見えるものは、懐中時計のチェーンと思われます。
