子供は,年長者と比べて自分がいかに弱いかを痛感しており,彼らと対等になりたいと願っている。私の息子は,自分もいつかは大人になるだろうこと,また，私もかつては子供であったことを知ってとても喜んだことを，私は覚えている。（即ち,）自分にも成功する見込みがあることを悟り,努力しようとしている様子が見てとれた。子供はごく幼い頃から年長者のすることを自分もやりたがるものであり,それは人のまねをする習慣によって明らかである。兄や姉は役に立つ。なぜなら,兄や姉の意図は理解できるし,彼らの能力は大人の能力ほど手の届かないものではないからである。
The child is impressed by his own weakness in comparison with older people, and he wishes to become their equal. I remember my boy's profound delight when he realized that he would one day be a man and that I had once been a child ; one could see effort being stimulated by the realization that success was possible. From a very early age, the child wishes to do what older people do, as is shown by the practice of imitation. Older brothers and sisters are useful, because their purposes can be understood and their capacities are not so far out of reach as those of grown-up people.

＜寸言＞
大きな目標を持ちつつも、努力によって成功を得ることが可能な目標をいっぱい設定し実行することによって、当初はとても無理だと思われた大きな目標も達成できるようになる。しかし、そのことは非力なうちは理解できない。
