「もちろん、私たちは、愛する人びとの幸福を願うべきであるが、私たち自身の幸福と引き換えであってはならない。事実、自己否定の教義に含まれている'自己とその他の世界との対立は、私たちが外部の人びとや事物に本物の関心を寄せるようになるやいなや、消滅する。そういう関心を通して、人は、自分が生命の流れの一部であり、衝突時以外には他の実体と関係を持つことができない'ビリヤードの球'のような固い分離した実体ではない、ということを感じるようになる。」
Undoubtedly we should desire the happiness of those whom we love, but not as an alternative to our own. In fact the whole antithesis between self and the rest of the world, which is implied in the doctrine of self-denial, disappears as soon as we have any genuine interest in persons or things outside ourselves. Through such interests a man comes to feel himself part of the stream of life, not a hard separate entity like a billiard-ball, which can have no relation with other such entities except that of collision.

愛国心も同じ。個々の国民の幸福を犠牲にしての（引き換えの）愛国心であってはならない。にもかかわらず、日本の支配層・権力者はそういった愛国心を称揚する。
