When in the morning you smell bacon, gustatory images inevitably arise. The word "sensation" is supposed to apply to that part of the mental occurrence which is not due to past individual experience, while the word "perception" applies to the sensation together with adjuncts that the past history of the individual has rendered inevitable. It is clear that to disentangle the part of the total experience which is to be called "sensation," is a matter of elaborate psychological theory. What we know without theory is the total occurrence which is a "perception."
