Conscientious people are apt to work too hard and to spoil their work by doing so. Bagehot speaks somewhere of men he knew in the City who went bankrupt because they worked eight hours a day, but would have been rich if they had confined themselves to four hours. I think many learned men could profit by this analogy.

よい材料を集めればよいもの（製品や作品）ができるわけではない。そこには新しい発想がなければならず、斬新な発想のためには十分な余暇時間が必要である。その意味で、よいものを創造するためには。一生懸命努力しればよいという根性論や精神論は不適切である。
