個人が当然持つべき創意と柔軟性の量を保持するためには，各個人は全て一つの厳格な鋳型におし込まれてはならない。あるいは，別の比喩をもちいれば，一つの軍隊を作るように訓練されてはならない。多様性は，単一の福音を全ての人々が受けいれることを排除するという事実にもかかわらず，必須のものである（本質的に重要なものである）。しかしそのような教えを説くことは，特に困難な時代においては難しいことである。しかも，もしかすると，ある種のにがい教訓が悲劇的な経験から学びとられるまで，そのことは実際の効果（影響）を与えることができないかも知れない。
And if individuals are to retain that measure of initiative and flexibility which they ought to have, they must not be all forced into one rigid mold; or, to change the metaphor, all drilled into one army. Diversity is essential in spite of the fact that it precludes universal acceptance of a single gospel. But to preach such a doctrine is difficult especially in arduous times. And perhaps it cannot be effective until some bitter lessons have been learned by tragic experience.
