ミルの『自由論』は，『婦人の隷属』よりも（女性が解放された）今日では重要である。それはこの本(『自由論』)が擁護する大義が(『婦人の隷属』が擁護する大義と比べて)あまり成功していない（実現していない）ことによっている。概して，今日（注：1955年）における世界の自由は百年前よりもずっと減っている。また，予見しうる近い将来において､自由に対する制限が減っていきそうだと想定する理由はまったく存在してない。
Mill's book On Liberty is more important to us in the present day than his book On the Subjection of Women. It is more important because the cause which it advocates has been less successful. There is, on the whole, much less liberty in the world now than there was a hundred years ago; and there is no reason to suppose that restrictions on liberty are likely to grow less in any foreseeable future.

子供の頃はいろいろな自由が許されるが（享受できるが）成長するにつれて様々なルールを身に着けなければならない。いったん身につければ、それほど苦にならずにルールに従うことができるが、そういった社会のルールに従いたくないと思い抵抗する場合は、非常な反発力が働くか、あるいは働かない場合はその人は社会から無視される。
