摩天楼は岩盤の上に建てる必要があるのでロンドンに建てることはできない，といわれている。ミルの学説は，粘土（層）の上に建てられた摩天楼のように基礎がいつも沈みつつあったので，不安定なものであった。・・・別の言い方をすると，道徳と知性とは彼の思考のなかで絶えず闘っていて，道徳はテーラー夫人において，また，知性は彼の父において，体現されていた。一方が柔かすぎるとすれば，他方は過酷なものであった。そこから生じた合成物は，実際面では情深いものであったが，理論面ではいくらか一貫性のないものであった。
Skyscrapers, I am told, cannot be built in London because they need to be founded on rock. Mill's doctrines, like a skyscraper founded on clay, were shaky because the foundations were continually sinking. ... To put the matter in another way: morals and intellect were perpetually at war in his thought, morals being incarnate in Mrs. Taylor and intellect in his father. If the one was too soft, the other was too harsh. The amalgam which resulted was practically beneficent, but theoretically somewhat incoherent.

＜寸言＞
基礎は外から眺めるだけではどうなっているかわからない。
立派な高層ビルがいっぱいたっていても，岩盤の上に建っているわけではない東京の高層ビルは、大地震でどうなることや、ら起こってみないとわからない。倒壊しないまでも、建て直さなければいけないものが大量に生まれるかもしれない。
人間の場合も同様。盤石に見える自民党も,虚構の共通理解の上での「一強」「面従腹背」だったとしたら・・・。
