The twin conceptions of sin and vindictive punishment seem to be at the root of much that is most vigorous, both in religion and politics. I cannot believe, as some psycho-analysts do, that the feeling of sin is innate, though I believe it to be a product of very early infancy. I think that, if this feeling could be eradicated, the amount of cruelty in the world would be very greatly diminished.

人間には善意と悪意の正反対の感情がある。いや、愛情と憎悪は正反対の概念ではなく、愛情の反対は無関心だとよく言われる。そうであるとしたなられば、できるだけ無関心ではなく、いろいろなことに興味を持って客観的に事実を理解しようとする人々が増えれば、人間の悪意は減っていくであろう。しかし、国民に対して中立であるべき政府さえもが、情報を隠し、自分たちの統治に都合がよい誤解を国民がもってもらえるとよいと思って情報公開をおこたるとしたら、ましてや公文書を改ざんするようでは、なかなか前途多難である。
