【"factor"：単なる「要素」ではなく、ある特定の結果にいたった「要因」を言い、それは個人の判断である場合が多い。】
【"element"：自然界の基本現象の一部（要素）という意味合いが強い。なお、"elements"は暴風雨のこと。】

(1-1) Her interest in people was a factor in her choice of journalism for career.
[他人のことへの興味が，彼女がジャーナリズムを仕事に選んだ大きな要因だと言える。]

(1-2) Other reasons for academic decline are weakened curricula, permissiveness and excessive TV viewing. But says Astin, "We should not discount drug abuse as a factor".
