★ elude / evade / avoid / escape (pp.072-073)
(1) "elude": ４つとも「逃れる」や「避ける」の意味があるが、"elude"には(トリックを使って)「ごまかす」とか「相手を煙に巻く」という底意（そこい）がある。
The wanted man eluded his pursuers by planting false clues.（お尋ね者が嘘の手がかりをわざと見せておいて、追手から逃れた＝トリックを用いて追手の目をくらませた。）
(2) "evade":（"elude"は意思的の場合も neutral な言葉で非難の気持ちはあまり含まれていないが、）"evade"の場合は義務を怠ることに用いられ、さげすみの気持ちが含まれている。
We despise the men who evaded service in the war.（戦時中においては、兵役逃れをした人を我々は軽蔑する。）
(3) "avoid":対象から、意思的に、または、偶然に間隔をおく場合。
I leave for the office early in the morning to avoid traffic congestion.（交通の混雑をさけて、朝早く会社に出かける。）
(4) "escape": 束縛から逃げ出すといった特殊な意味がある。
The prisoner escaped (or broke away) from prison.（脱獄した。）
Ｒ英単語・熟語集の用例とはできるだけ重複しないようにしますが、用例が少ない場合はどうしても重複してしまいます。あしからず。
Ａ．ラッセルの著作における用例
＜用例１＞ We all feel ourselves above classification. Some philosophers - Bergson, for example - have appealed to this feeling and have advanced theoretical reasons for the view that what is interesting in each of us is something that eludes verbal analysis. Philosophers who do this are very popular.

If it ( = Real happiness) is to become possible, some way must be found by which the tyranny of public opinion can be either lessened or evaded, and by which members of the intelligent minority can come to know each other and enjoy each other's society..
[もしも、真の幸福を可能にしたいのであれば、世論の横暴さを減らすかあるいは回避できるような方法を見つけるか、あるいは、少数派の知的な人間がお互い知り合い、つきあいを楽しめるようななんらかの方法を発見しなければならない。]

＜用例３＞ You can get away from envy by enjoying the pleasures that come your way, by doing the work that you have to do, and by avoiding comparisons with those whom you imagine, perhaps quite falsely, to be more fortunate than yourself.
