Chapter 8:Cosmic Purpose , n.16

The pantheistic doctrine of Cosmic Purpose, like the theistic doctrine, suffers, though in a somewhat different way, from the difficulty of explaining the necessity of a temporal evolution. If time is not ultimately real - as practically all pantheists believe - why should the best things in the history of the world come late rather than early? Would not the reverse order have done just as well? If the idea that events have dates is an illusion, from which God is free, why should He choose to put the pleasant events at the end and the unpleasant ones at the beginning? I agree with Dean Inge in thinking this question unanswerable.
