第２章　コペルニクス的革命（コペルニクス的転回） n.3 - ルターの地動説批判 Kindle series 　当初，彼（コペルニクス）に対し，ほとんどのプロテスタント（新教徒）はカトリック（旧教徒）より厳しかった。ルターは「人々（民衆）は，天や大空（firmament）（注：あわせて「天空」）や太陽や月ではなく，地球が回る（太陽の周りを回る）と懸命に示そうとした新興の（成り上がりの）占星術師（astroger）に耳を傾けている。賢明と思われたいと願う者は，全ての体系の中で,当然,何らかの最上の新しい体系を考えださなければならない。この愚か者は，天文学の学問全体をひっくり返そうと願っている。しかし，聖書は，ヨシュア (Joshua 英語読みで「ジョシュア」) が止まれ（静止せよ）と命令したのは太陽に対してであり，地球に対してではない」と我々に語っている。メランヒトンも同様に強調していた。カルビンも同様である。彼は「世界も確立されており,動くことなし」(「詩篇」九三ノ一／stablish = esablish)という聖書の言葉を引用した後，勝ち誇るように次のように結論している（結んでいる）。「誰が，聖霊の権威の上にコペルニクスの権威をあえて置こうとするであろうか？」　ウェスリー(John Wesley, 1703-1791：18世紀のイングランド国教会の司祭で、その後メソジスト運動と呼ばれる信仰覚醒運動を指導した人物)でさえ，十八世紀のように遅い時期に，あえて強調することはなかった一方，それにもかかわらず，天文学上の新説は「不信仰に向かい易い」と述べている。

Chapter 2: The Copernican Revolution, n.3 At first, the Protestants were almost more bitter against him than the Catholics. Luther said that “ People give ear to an upstart astrologer who strove to show that the earth revolves, not the heavens or the firmament, the sun and the moon. Whoever wishes to appear clever must devise some new system, which of all systems is of course the very best. This fool wishes to reverse the entire science of astronomy ; but sacred Scripture tells us that Joshua commanded the sun to stand still, and not the earth.” Melanchthon was equally emphatic ; so was Calvin, who, after quoting the text : “ The world also is stablished (= established), that it cannot be moved ” (Ps. xciii, i), triumphantly concluded : “ Who will venture to place the authority of Copernicus above that of the Holy Spirit ? ” Even Wesley, so late as the eighteenth century, while not daring to be quite so emphatic, nevertheless stated that the new doctrines in astronomy “ tend toward infidelity."
