哲学が非常にしばしば使用してきた二つの語がある。それは「意識」 (consciousness) と 「経験｣ (experience) とである。これら二つの語は定義し直されなければならない。 いや、むしろ、はじめて定義されなければならない。というのは、たいていの場合、それらの意味は明白であるかのごとく、定義なして用いられているからである。
人間または動物は「意識をもつ」が石は意識をもたないと言うとき、我々はいったい何を意味しているのか。そのとき意味されていると思われる二つの異なる事柄があり、その二つのうち第一のものは外的観察の対象となりうるが第二のものはそうでない。第一のものは、人間または動物が、 もし問題になっている事象（the event in question）が過去に起らなかったとした場合とはちがった仕方で、 未来において行動するということである。しかしこれはむしろ「経験」の定義とするほうがよいかも知れない。意識の定義の第二のものは、「注意｣ (noticing) という関係から導き出されるであろう。何かが私に起るとき私はそれに注意するかも知れないし、注意しないかも知れない。注意する場合、私はそれを「意識する」と言ってよいのである。この定義によれば、「意識」とはあることが私に起りつつある、あるいは起ってしまった、という知識なのである。しかしこの定義において「知識」とは何を意味するかは、なお研究すべき残された問題である。

There are two words which have been very frequently employed by philosophers. They are the words ‘consciousness' and 'experience*. Both will need to be re-defined -- or, rather, to be defined, for in general they are employed as if their meaning were obvious.
What can we mean when we say that a man or an animal is 'conscious' but a stone is not? There are two different things that may be meant, of which the first, but not the second, is open to external observation. The first is that the man or the animal behaves in future in a way in which he would not behave if the event in question had not happened. This might perhaps be better taken as the definition of 'experience'. The second definition of 'consciousness' will be derived from the relation of 'noticing'. When anything happens to me, I may or may not notice it. If I notice it, I may be said to be ‘conscious' of it. According to this definition, 'consciousness' consists in the knowledge that something is happening to me or has happened to me. What is meant by 'knowledge' in this definition remains to be investigated.
