盲目的な衝動は、時に破壊や死を招く源であるが、またそれは世界が含みうる最良のものに導く源でもある。つまり盲目的な衝動は、戦争の源泉ではあるが、またそれは科学や芸術、恋愛、といったものの源泉でもある。望ましいのは衝動を弱めることではなく、衝動の方向が死と衰退へ向かうよりは、生命と成長の方向へ向かうことである。
Blind impulses sometimes lead to destruction and death, but at other times they lead to the best things the world contains. Blind impulse is the source of war, but it is also the source of science, and art, and love. It is not the weakening of impulse that is to be desired, but the direction of impulse towards life and growth rather than towards death and decay.

＜寸言＞
情熱や衝動がなくなったら，生ける屍になってしまうかも知れない。しかし，自分の衝動や情熱に駆られるままであれば，自分が苦しむだけでなく，多くの「他人」に害を及ぼす。お互いの情熱や衝動は尊重しあわないといけないが、やはり、理性によって自分の情熱や衝動のいわれ（原因/由来）や危険性は時々反省してみる必要がある。
そうして、反省した後は、自分の情熱を大事にしてもう一歩進んでみよう。
