愛が（対象を）理解する鍵であると説く人もいるが,その理解が科学的理解のことであれば,この言葉は正しいと私は思わない。けれども,憎悪を物事の理解への鍵と見直すのは,さらに非科学的であろう。すべての感情は,理解しようとする対象について好意的であろうと悪意をもっていようと,必ず判断をゆがめる。
There are those who say that love is the key to understanding, but if scientific understanding is meant, I do not think they are right. It would, however, be even more unscientific to regard hatred as the key to understanding. Every emotion, whether friendly or unfriendly, distorts judgement.

もちろん,大地震や大事故などの自然災害や人災がおこれば,知らない人々の安否についても無関心ではいられなくなります。ここで言っているのは,あくまでも「一般的にいって（通常の大部分）は」ということであり,「直接関係していない人や事柄」に対しては,お互いさまですが,ほとんど無関心,時には「冷酷」でさえあります。
