(第一章 第一次世界大戦)
コレットに出会ってまもない頃は,コレットに対する私の愛がいかに真面目なものであるか,私は気づいていなかった。（コレットに出会うまでは）私の真剣な感情は,オットリンに全て捧げられていると,常に考えていた。コレットは,オットリンに比べずっと若く,オットリンほど名士ではなく,オットリンよりも軽薄な快楽をより享受できたので,私は自分の感情をまだ信ずることができず,半ば軽い火遊び（情事）をしていると思っていた。
(1915年12月の?)クリスマスに私は,（オットリンのいる）ガーシントンに出かけ,滞在した。ガーシントンでは,盛大なパーティが開かれた。そのパーティには,ケインズ（John Maynard Keynes, 1st Baron Keynes, 1883-1946）も出席しており,彼は,２匹の犬の結婚式において'決まり文句'を読み上げ（？）,最後に次のように結んだ。「人間ともに参列す−−犬をして離別させざらんことを！」 リットン・ストレイチー（Giles Lytton Strachey,1880-1932）もパーティーに参加しており,自分の著作 『著名なビクトリア朝時代人』（Eminent Victorian）の（出版前の）原稿を我々に読んで聞かせた。
キャサリーン・マンスフィールド（Katherine Mansfield ,1888-1923）とミドルトン・マリー（John Middleton Murry,）もまた参加していた。私は以前彼らと会ってはいたが（＝面通ししただけ）,キャサリーン・マンスフィールドのことをよく知るようになったのはこの時のことであった。（注：日高氏は,「・・・カザリーンと知り合いになるのはこの時はじめてであった。」と誤訳されている）。私の受けた彼女の印象が正しいかどうかはわからないが,他の人たちが受けた彼女の印象とはまったく異なっていた。彼女の話はとてもすばらしかった。彼女の話は彼女が書いたものよりはるかに良く,特に彼女が書こうとしていることについて話してくれる時はすばらしかった。しかし,他の人たちのことを語るときは,嫉妬深く,不機嫌であり,また,人々が少しでも知られたくないことを見つけ出したり,どのようなものであれ他人の性格の欠点を発見することにおいて,驚くほど鋭い洞察力を発揮した。（ラッセル原注：pp.60-61 の,私のオットリン宛の手紙を参照) キャサリンはオットリンを嫌っていた。なぜならマリーがオットリンを嫌っていなかったからである。（注：二人は1912年に出会い,1918年に結婚している。したがってパーティが開催されたときにはまだ結婚していない。因みにマリーは４度結婚しており,キャサリンは２度目の妻にあたる。）私がオットリンに対して懐いてきた感情を克服しなければならないということが,明らかになった。というのは,彼女はもはや私に幸福感を与えてきた感情を十分には返してはくれなかったからである。私は,キャサリン・マンスフィールドがオットリンを非難して言う全てを傾聴した。ついに,私はキャサリンの言ったことをほとんど信じなかったけれども,オットリンを'愛人'というよりも'友だち'として考えることができるようになっていた。これ以後,私は,もう二度とキャサリンと会うことはなかったが,私のコレットに対する感情を思う存分解放することができた。

I did not know in the first days how serious was my love for Colette. I had got used to thinking that all my serious feelings were given to Ottoline. Colette was so much younger, so much less of a personage, so much more capable of frivolous pleasures, that I could not believe in my own feelings, and half supposed that I was having a light affair with her. At Christmas I went to stay at Garsington, where there was a large party. Keynes was there, and read the marriage service over two dogs, ending, 'Whom man hath joined, let not dog put asunder.' Lytton Strachey was there and read us the manuscript of Eminent Victorians. Katherine Mansfield and Middleton Murry were also there. I had just met them before, but it was at this time that I got to know her well. I do not know whether my impression of her was just, but it was quite different from other people's. Her talk was marvellous, much better than her writing, especially when she was telling of things that she was going to write, but when she spoke about people she was envious, dark, and full of alarming penetration in discovering what they least wished known and whatever was bad in their characteristics.' She hated Ottoline because Murry did not. It had become clear to me that I must get over the feeling that I had had for Ottoline, as she no longer returned it sufficiently to give me any happiness. I listened to all that Katherine Mansfield had to say against her; in the end I believed very little of it, but I had become able to think of Ottoline as a friend rather than a lover. After this I saw no more of Katherine, but was able to allow my feeling for Colette free scope.
