失望を抱かせたテレビ関係のもう一つの出来事は、ルーズヴェルト夫人(訳注：米国大統領夫人)、ブースビー卿、ゲイッケル氏（訳注：英国労働党党首）と私の４人で、核問題について討論したBBCの番組であった。ルーズヴェルト夫人が「共産主義に屈服するよりは人類が滅びたほうがましであり、私はそのほうをより好む」という信条を明確に述べたのを耳にして、私はぞっとした。
Another disappointing TV occasion was a BBC discussion of nuclear matters by Mrs Roosevelt, Lord Boothby, Mr Gaitskell, and myself. I was horrified to hear Mrs Roosevelt enunciate the belief that it would be better, and that she would prefer, to have the human race destroyed than to have it succumb to Communism.

個人がどのようなことを頭で考えようと自由です。また、権力を持たない一般市民がどのような過激な発言を公の場でしたとしても、たいていは無視されるだけで、大きな影響を及ぼすことはありません。
しかし、多少なりとも公的な影響力を持つ人物の場合は事情が異なります。1960年頃のBBC討論番組で、ルーズベルト夫人（元米大統領フランクリン・ルーズベルトの妻であり、国連や人権問題でも大きな発言力を持っていた人物）が、「人類が共産主義に屈するくらいなら、滅びたほうがましだ」（「本日のラッセルの言葉」として引用）と明言したことは、その好例です。
共産主義を強く嫌うあまり、このような極端な発言を好む人もいるかもしれません。しかし、よく考えてみてください。共産主義に屈することを嫌っていても、人類の滅亡まで望まない人々が大半でしょう。そうした人々まで権力者の信条の犠牲にならなければならない理由はどこにもありません。
一歩譲って、米ソの国民が自分たちの選んだ指導者の誤った政策の結果として被害を受けるなら「自業自得」と言えるかもしれません。しかし、他の国の人々まで巻き添えにする権利は、誰にも（またいかなる国にも）ありません。もし当時のアメリカでこのような考えを当然視する人がいたとすれば、死後の救いを確信する宗教観が背景にあったのかもしれません。とはいえ、いかなる宗教においても、狂信は人類にとって危険です。
Individuals are free to think whatever they like. Likewise, even if ordinary citizens without any political power make extreme remarks in public, they are usually ignored and rarely have any real impact.
However, the situation is quite different when the person in question has even a small degree of public influence. A good example is the remark made around 1960 on a BBC debate program by Mrs. Roosevelt -- the widow of former U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who at the time wielded considerable influence in the United Nations and on human rights issues. She explicitly declared (as quoted in Today's Russell Words), "It would be better for humanity to perish than to succumb to Communism."
Some people, in their intense hatred of communism, may even welcome such extreme statements. But think carefully: even those who dislike communism would hardly wish for the destruction of the entire human race. There is no reason why such people should be forced to become victims of the beliefs held by those in power.
To go one step further, if the peoples of the United States and the Soviet Union were to suffer as a result of the misguided policies of the leaders they themselves had chosen, one might call it "their own fault." But no one -- and no nation -- has the right to drag the peoples of other countries down with them. If there were indeed Americans at that time who took such ideas for granted, perhaps it was because of a religious conviction that promised salvation after death. In any case, fanaticism in any religion is a danger to humanity.
