選挙は、特別な事情がない限り、数年ごとにしか実施されません。たとえば、アメリカの大統領選挙は憲法により４年に一度と定められています。このような大規模な選挙においては、たとえ不支持率が支持率を大幅に上回ったとしても、健康上の深刻な問題や突発的な事態が生じない限り、途中で再選挙が行われることは通常ありません。
共産主義国家や独裁国家と異なり、民主主義国家では、メディアが健全に機能していれば、世論を反映した政治が行われる傾向があります。しかし、近年では、SNSが普及し、真偽が定かでない不確かな情報に基づいて判断する人も少なくなく、選挙に大きな影響を及ぼすケースも見られます。
現在２期目を努めているアメリカのトランプ大統領は、憲法の規定から次の大統領選挙には立候補できません。従って、再選を意識した言動をする必要性があまりありません。そのためか、現在、不支持率が支持率を大幅に上回っていますが、多くの反対があることでも、自分の思いを推し進めているように見受けられます。特に、対外的なことは、対内的なことに比べ、アメリカ国民もあまり気にしないので、多くの日本国民から見ると、やりたい放題に振る舞っている印象を受けます。もうじき79歳になるトランプ大統領にとって、最大の欲望は「歴史に名をとどめる」ことであり内容はあまり問わないかのように思えてしまいますが、トランプ大統領の本心はどこにあるでしょうか？

Currently serving his second term, President Donald Trump of the United States is constitutionally barred from running in the next presidential election. Therefore, he has little need to tailor his speech and actions with an eye toward re-election. Perhaps as a result, although his disapproval rating now far exceeds his approval rating, he appears to be pressing ahead with his own agenda despite considerable opposition. In particular, when it comes to foreign affairs, unlike domestic issues, which tend to attract more public scrutiny, American citizens show relatively less concern, which may contribute to the impression, especially among many Japanese observers, that he is acting without restraint. As President Trump approaches the age of 79, his greatest ambition seems to be to "leave his name in history," regardless of how he is remembered. But what is his true intention?
