都会の生活に慣れた人なら誰でも、人口のまばらな田舎では必要とされないような、様々な自由の制限を当然のこととして受け入れている。街のどこかに人だかりができたとたんに、警官が「立ち止まらずに進んでください」と声をかけるが、それに腹を立てる人はいない。これまで国家が享受してきた無秩序な自由は、現代の世界においては、ロンドンやニューヨークの道路上における歩行者や自動車の無秩序な自由と同様、不可能である。
Everybody accustomed to urban life accepts as a matter of course various limitations on liberty which are not necessary in a sparsely populated countryside. The moment a crowd congregates anywhere in a town, the police say, “Pass along, please”, and nobody is indignant. The anarchic liberty enjoyed hitherto by nations is just as impossible in the modem world as would be anarchic liberty for either pedestrians or motorists in the streets of London or New York.

権力欲が強い人は、人から好かれるよりも恐れられることにより快感を覚えるのでしょうか？ 大部分の人々は村八分にされることを恐れ傍若無人に振る舞うことはしませんが、強大な権力を持ってしまえばそんな心配はなくなるのでしょうか？ 権力と金さえあればほとんど何でも手に入れられるという人生観を持っている人は、権力と金を追い求める人生を送りそうです。
トランプは若い時に日本円にして約50億円の財産を父親から譲り受けたそうですが、そのほとんどは脱税で得たものだと言われています。当初はどちらかと言えば気が弱かった青年が、某弁護士の手ほどきを受けてモンスターへと成長していった様子を描いた映画（The Apprentice）が日本でも上映されましたが、私はあいにくまだ見ていません。いずれアマゾンの Prime Video で無料で見られるようになるはずですから、その時に見ようと思っています。

Do people with a strong lust for power find more pleasure in being feared than in being liked? Most people are afraid of being ostracized and therefore refrain from acting outrageously, but does that concern vanish once someone attains overwhelming power? A film titled The Apprentice, which depicts how a rather timid young man grew into a monster under the guidance of a certain lawyer, has also been released in Japan. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen it yet, but I assume it will eventually become available for free on Amazon Prime Video, and I plan to watch it then.>
